How Pregnancy Testing Works
Pregnancy testing measures the hormone hCG (human chorionic gonadotropin), which your body produces after a fertilized egg implants in the uterus. If you test too early, before enough hCG has built up in your system, you could get an inaccurate result.
Most home pregnancy tests are designed to detect hCG around the time of your missed period. The Mayo Clinic recommends waiting until a day or two after your missed period for the most reliable results. Testing first thing in the morning, when your urine is most concentrated, may also improve accuracy.
When Results Feel Unclear
A negative result doesn’t always mean you aren’t pregnant. If you tested early, your hCG levels may not have reached the threshold yet. If your period doesn’t begin within a few days, try testing again.
For those with irregular cycles, it may be best to wait about three weeks after unprotected sex before testing. If you’re still uncertain, our registered nurses at Informed Choices Women’s Center can provide medical-grade pregnancy testing at no cost, helping you confidently move forward.
Next Steps After a Positive Result
Seeing a positive pregnancy test can stir up a wide range of emotions. After your pregnancy test, our nurse will discuss your next steps with you. Depending on your situation and eligibility, you may receive a limited ultrasound.
This scan can confirm whether the pregnancy is developing, determine how far along you are, and verify that the pregnancy is located in the uterus.
During your visit, you’ll also have the chance to meet with one of our trained advocates, who will listen, answer questions, and share helpful resources for your unique situation.
