Adoption
Adoption may be a fit for you if you know you don’t want an abortion and you’re not quite ready to parent.
Choosing adoption could be right for you if:
- You’re not ready to be a parent
- Abortion isn’t an option for you
- Your current relationship or living situation isn’t safe for a child
- You want to provide a financially and emotionally stable environment
What is Adoption Exactly?
Adoption is the legal process where a child’s birth mother (and father, if possible) transfer their parental rights to an adoptive family. Once the adoption is finalized, the child legally becomes a member of the adoptive family.
It’s not an easy decision to make, but sometimes the hard decisions in life turn out to be the best decisions you’ve ever made.
Choosing an Adoption Plan
These days, as the birth mother, you have control of the adoption process. You get to choose the adoption plan that’s right for you and your lifestyle.
1. Open Adoption
Sixty to seventy percent of adoptions are open. Many birth moms choose this plan because they want to meet the family they’ve selected before their child is born.Â
This plan gives them a chance to build a relationship with the adoptive family and their child. With this plan, your child has the opportunity to ask questions and learn about you and your family.Â
2. Closed Adoption
Maybe privacy is what you need right now. If you would rather not have contact with the adoptive family, you would choose a closed adoption. A closed adoption allows the adoption agency to choose a family based on your preferences.Â
No identifying information is shared, and you would have no further contact with your child. Some women feel this is the best way to move on with their lives.
3. Semi-Open Adoption
Lastly, a semi-open adoption plan allows you to have contact with the adoptive family and your child. All communication happens through the adoption agency. It’s more private than an open adoption because you don’t share any identifying information.Â
