What are STDs/STIs & Do I have one?

A sexually transmitted disease (STI) is an infection that can spread during sexual activity. STIs are sometimes referred to as STDs, which stands for sexually transmitted diseases. Unfortunately, many people don’t realize they have an STI because it can go unnoticed for long periods. 

The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases states, “…STDs can cause long-term health problems, particularly in women and infants. Some of the health complications that arise from STIs include pelvic inflammatory disease, infertility, tubal or ectopic pregnancy, cervical cancer, and infections in infants born to infected mothers.”

Who should be tested for STDs/STIs?

Taking control of your health and wellness is essential. Getting tested will help you to stay healthy. Since STDs/STIs may go undetected, you may not know you have one until you receive the test results.
