Finding out you’re pregnant can be scary, and learning about your options can seem overwhelming. You’ll want to be sure you receive accurate information about your options, including abortion, adoption, and parenting.Â
If you are thinking about abortion, you’ll want to learn about the different types of abortion, including medical and surgical abortion. Knowing more about these procedures and their side effects will help you make the right decision.
What if I’m Less than 10 Weeks Along?
If your pregnancy is less than ten weeks, you may be eligible for a medical abortion. Medical abortions are carried out earlier in a woman’s pregnancy and consist of two medications: mifepristone and misoprostol. Mifepristone blocks progesterone, which is used to sustain a pregnancy, and misoprostol works to expel the pregnancy tissue from the body.Â
Side effects of mifepristone include abdominal cramping and vaginal bleeding, which may be severe. They also have the following:
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Chills
- Fever
- Headache
- Diarrhea
- CrampingÂ
- Vaginal bleeding
What is a Surgical Abortion?
If you are further than ten weeks along, you may need to have a surgical abortion, which is a more complex procedure. A surgical abortion involves medication or surgical instruments, which dilate the cervix, and either a gentle suctioning technique or an instrument called a curette to remove the pregnancy tissue from the uterus.Â
Side effects of surgical abortion can include:
- Cramping
- Bleeding
If you are experiencing any side effects like fever or severe cramping, seek medical attention immediately. This might be indicative of something more serious, such as an infection.Â
